Welcome to Sugar Theme

Welcome to Sugar Theme! There are plenty of theme options on the market and we're really glad you picked this one. We'll get out of your way fast, but before you start building, it's worth a few minutes to walk through how the theme is laid out. Sugar Theme is built differently from most premium themes, even ones you might already be familiar with, and a few small mental model shifts here will save you a lot of time later.

Tip

Every section and block in the editor has a Tutorial link at the top of its settings panel. If you ever get stuck on a specific piece, click that link to jump straight to its tutorial.

Start with Theme Settings

Before you touch a single section, open Theme Settings from the top-left of the Shopify theme editor and fill these out to match your brand. This is where everything global lives — logo, colors, typography, defaults — and it's what every section and block on every template pulls from.

The Sugar Theme homepage was designed specifically as a showcase for these settings. As you tweak the global typography, colors, and buttons, you'll see them animate across the page in real time. Once these are dialed in, you usually don't have to come back unless your brand changes.

  1. Open the Theme Settings panel (top-left in the Shopify editor).
  2. Set your logo, primary colors, and typography.
  3. Scroll through the rest — buttons, spacing, defaults — and tune to brand.
  4. Save, then move on to your templates.

Sections vs. Blocks — The Big Mental Shift

Sugar Theme ships with 30+ sections and over 115 blocks at launch. That ratio matters — Sugar Theme is a block-focused theme. If you install it and open Sections expecting to see every feature you paid for sitting there as its own section, you might wonder where everything went. It's not missing. It's organized differently.

Sections in Sugar Theme are reserved for things with a very specific use case: an Announcement Bar, a Marquee, a Quiz, things where the layout itself is the whole point. The bulk of what you'll customize lives inside blocks, and blocks are added inside layout sections.

Info

90% of the time you'll reach for one of the four layout sections — 2-Column, 3-Column, 4-Column, or Custom Columns — and add blocks inside them. Custom Columns is the most flexible and is what most builds end up using.

If you're looking for a specific feature and don't see it in the Sections menu, add a layout section first. Then explore the block menu inside it — that's where the rest of the theme lives.

Nested Blocks

Sugar Theme has a lot of nested blocks — blocks that go inside other blocks. Add a Custom Columns section and it'll automatically include a Simple Column block. Inside the Simple Column, you can add more blocks. Some of those blocks — like Container — can hold their own blocks too. That's the pattern: layout sections hold layout blocks hold content blocks.

As you build, keep this nesting in mind. If a block "disappears" or you can't find where it went, collapse and expand the nesting levels in the section tree on the left. You'll usually find it inside a parent block you didn't expect.

Tip

Don't be afraid of deep nesting — it's how Sugar Theme stays flexible without bloating the section menu. Collapse levels you're not editing to keep the tree readable.

Static Sections: Cart Drawer & Email Popups

Most sections live inside a specific template — your homepage, a product page, a collection page. But some sections are static: they're always present in the theme regardless of which template you're editing. The Cart Drawer and Email Popups are the two big ones.

Cart Drawer

Your Cart Drawer lives on the left of the editor. It's not one section — it's a collection of blocks, and like everywhere else in the theme, many of those blocks have their own nested blocks. Treat it the same way you'd treat any other layout: build it once, configure it well, and it'll work across every page.

Email Popups

Email popups are also static. You can have multiple popups configured inside this one section — each with its own targeting, content, and styling.

Everything else — your homepage, product pages, collection pages — varies by template. Switch templates and you're editing a different set of sections and blocks.

Quizzes

Quizzes are one of Sugar Theme's biggest selling points — the first Shopify theme to ship native, fully-built-in quizzes. We expect others to copy this, but for now it's ours.

To add a quiz, search "quiz" in the section menu. You'll find three quiz sections. The most important is Quiz Main — it initiates the quiz and is required. Without a Quiz Main section, the other quiz sections won't function.

Tip

Pair Quiz Main with a Hide Header and Footer section so the quiz takes over the full page. Sugar Theme has a whole Utility category for sections like this

We'll go deep on quiz settings and quiz blocks in their own tutorials. If you just want to start building, drop in Quiz Main and start exploring the settings — most of it is straightforward.

Use the Free Templates as Self-Guided Tutorials

Sugar Theme ships with a stack of free templates. The obvious way to use them is the obvious way — pick one, edit it, ship a landing page. But there's a second use that's just as valuable: use templates as self-guided tutorials.

  1. Open one of our page templates.
  2. Find a section or block you like.
  3. Select the section or block
  4. Look at the structure and settings to see how it was built.
Tip

If you only want one piece of a template, right-click any section or block to copy it, then paste it into your own theme. You don't have to take the whole page — grab a single section or even a single block.

Templates are some of the best learning material in the theme. They're real, working examples of what's possible, with every setting already dialed in.

Get Support

Discord

Join the Sugar Theme Discord — the Join Discord button is at the top right of the app. If your Discord account isn't connected yet, open your user settings (top-right profile menu) and connect it from there. Discord is where everyone else using the theme hangs out, including the Sugar team. It's the best place to get unstuck, share what you're building, or talk ecommerce.

Help Center

For direct support, click Help Center in the top right. You can report a bug, send us a message, or browse the existing answers. We read every message.

Tutorials

And remember — every section and block has its own tutorial, and the Tutorials menu at the top is always one click away. Most questions are answered there before they reach support.

That's the orientation. Go build something sweet. We'll see you in Discord.
